Utes score 21 points in the third to break it open

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Quinton Ganther ran for 156 yards and three touchdowns to lead Utah past UNLV 42-32 Saturday.

Ganther rushed for two third-quarter touchdowns, from 63 and 40 yards, as the Utes (4-4, 2-3 Mountain West Conference) outscored the Rebels 21-0 in the third after leading 21-13 at halftime.

Ganther's other touchdown came from 1 yard with 1:13 left in the second quarter as he carried 15 times in the game and also caught a pair of passes for 66 yards.

The Utes snapped a three-game losing streak and have won 10 straight against UNLV (2-6, 1-4) dating back to 1979.

Utah Quarterback Brian Johnson threw for 264 yards on 20-of-29 passing with three touchdowns.

He threw two touchdowns to wide receiver John Madsen, who caught for 114 yards as the Utes won their first road game in four tries this season.

The Utes beat their former offensive coordinator, UNLV coach Mike Sanford, who helped Utah to a 21-2 record as an assistant to current Florida coach Urban Meyer the past two years.

UNLV's Jarrod Jackson threw for 356 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. He went 29-for-54 with two interceptions.

Greg Estandia had 120 yards on 10 receptions and two touchdowns for the Rebels, and Corey Anderson caught a touchdown pass and had 92 yards receiving.

The loss assures UNLV of a losing season with three games to play. The Rebels have not had a winning record since going 8-5 in 2000.
