DAVIS, Calif. (AP) -- Jon Grant rushed for a 1-yard score with
4:23 to play, and Tony Kays caught 13 passes for 212 yards in UC
Davis' 20-13 victory over Cal Poly on Saturday.
Kays' 58-yard catch set up Grant's go-ahead score for the Aggies
(5-3, 3-1), who matched Cal Poly's record atop the Great West
Conference. UC Davis' defense held the Mustangs to 113 yards of
Grant was 21-of-44 for 307 yards and one score for UC Davis,
which has won five of six -- including a victory over Stanford --
since two season-opening losses.
Kenny Chicoine returned an interception 59 yards for a score
early in the fourth quarter to tie it for the Mustangs (5-3, 3-1),
but freshman quarterback Matt Brennan was sacked twice while trying
to lead Cal Poly's final drive in the so-called "Horseshoe
Classic" rivalry game. Brennan was 8-of-18 for just 58 yards in
his first start.
Blaise Smith caught a 32-yard TD pass from Grant with 32 seconds
left before halftime, putting UC Davis up 10-6.
