BROOKLINE, Mass. (AP) -- Ron Whitcomb threw for 178 yards and ran
for a touchdown and Jermaine Walker had 13 tackles and a pair of
sacks as Maine beat Northeastern 14-10 on Saturday.
Maine (4-5, 2-4 Atlantic 10) scored on its first two possessions
and Joan Quezada batted down an Anthony Orio pass in the end zone
in the closing seconds for the Black Bears.
Northeastern (1-8, 1-5) drove to Maine's 28-yard line before
Quezada sealed the win for Maine.
Montell Owens scored on a 4-yard run up the middle to put the
Black Bears up 7-0 on their opening drive.
After Northeastern went three and out on its first possession,
Whitcomb ran for a 1-yard touchdown on fourth and goal to give the
Black Bears a 14-0 lead.
Northeastern made the score 14-3 on a 23-yard field goal by Miro
Kesic late in the first quarter.
Orio then ran in for a 3-yard touchdown with 53 seconds
remaining in the first half to make the score 14-10.
But Maine allowed just seven first downs and no points the rest
of the game. Northeastern managed just 253 yards of total offense
Arel Gordon had 11 catches for 90 yards and 46 rushing yards
while both Mike DeVito and Patrick McCross had a pair of sacks for
the Black Bears.
Orio threw for 155 yards and ran for 20 yards and Lamar Gay had
an interception for the Huskies.
