HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- Joseph Lewis threw for 320 yards and five
touchdowns as Southern University beat Texas Southern 44-20
Three of Lewis' touchdown passes were to James Vernon, who had
six catches for 101 yards. Lewis had all five of his scoring tosses
before the midway point of the third quarter as Southern (2-4)
built a 41-0 lead.
Daniel Davis scored on a 24-yard pass and an 80-yard punt return
for Texas Southern (1-5).
Southern scored on six of its first seven possessions, with
Vernon opening the scoring on a 46-yard pass from Lewis to cap a
95-yard drive. Southern's other touchdown drives covered 75, 80,
60, 82 and 90 yards.
Vernon's other scoring catches were from 32 and 3 yards. Trent
Thomas caught a 6-yard scoring pass to put Southern ahead 14-0 late
in the first quarter.
Gerard Landry completed the scoring flurry with a 74-yard catch
midway through the third quarter.
Larry Nichols had 19 carries for 85 yards and a touchdown for
Brent Wilson led Texas Southern with 98 yards on 20 carries.
