Memphis 33, Chattanooga 14

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Martin Hankins threw for 294 yards and a touchdown Saturday night, while Jamarcus Gaither added two more scores as Memphis won its first game of the season 33-14 over Chattanooga.

The Tigers (1-1) collected 427 yards of offense on the night as Hankins connected with 10 different receivers, including a 14-yard scoring pass to Earnest Williams to close his night in the fourth quarter.

Hankins, a junior transfer from Southeastern Louisiana, also caught a touchdown pass on an end-around play in the first half.

Eldra Buckley, Chattanooga's star running back, led the offense with 105 yards on 24 carries, his sixth consecutive 100-yard game.

But the Mocs could manage little else as Chattanooga was limited to 12 first downs and 111 yards passing, though quarterback Antonio Miller did manage two touchdown passes on the night.

The Tigers' performance was a change from Memphis' 28-25 opening loss to Mississippi last week when coach Tommy West thought his defense, particularly up front, was manhandled by the Rebels' offensive line.

The loss wasn't as bad for the I-AA Mocs (1-1) as the previous three games against Memphis, when the Tigers scored 43, 52 and 59 points.

The Tigers' offense got untracked midway through the game, scoring on five of six possessions to build a 26-7 lead early in the third period.

The Mocs managed only 71 yards of offense in the second and third quarters as Memphis built their lead.

Memphis led 19-7 after scoring three times in the second period and shutting down the Mocs' offense.

Chattanooga used a 22-yard scramble by Miller to set up its first score. Three plays after Miller's run, he hit Michael Johnson for a 10-yard touchdown, Chattanooga's only score of the half.

Memphis resorted to some trickery to answer the Mocs' first score. On first down from the Chattanooga 26, Hankins handed off to Joseph Doss who gave it to wide receiver Mario Pratcher on a reverse. Pratcher then hit Hankins who was alone on the right side. The kicked by Trey Adams failed.

Adams also missed a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter, but redeemed himself later in the period with field goals of 30 and 28 yards.

An interception and 30-yard return by Memphis cornerback Brandon McDonald set up Memphis' other touchdown. The pick set the Tigers up at the Chattanooga 12, and Gaither scored from 3 yards to give Memphis is halftime lead.

Hankins was 10-of-15 in the half for 151 yards. Buckley had 62 of the Mocs' 84 yards rushing before intermission.

Gaither added his second touchdown on the Tigers' first possession of the second half.

Chattanooga's final points came when Miller hit Michael Gilmore a 6-yard scoring strike with just over a minute to play.
