Kansas 21, Louisiana-Monroe 19

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Kerry Meier threw for two touchdowns and
ran for another and Kansas survived a late rally to beat
Louisiana-Monroe 21-19 on Saturday night.

Louisiana-Monroe got within two points with 3:31 to go when
Kinsmon Lancaster, capping a nine-play, 81-yard drive, threw a
3-yard touchdown pass to Zeek Zacharie.

That left the visitors trailing by two points because they had
missed the extra point after the third touchdown late in the third
quarter. After drawing a 5-yard procedure penalty, the Warhawks'
try for a 2-point conversion failed when Lancaster's pass fell
incomplete in the end zone.

Jon Cornish rushed for 103 yards for the Jayhawks (2-0). The
senior running back, who had 140 yards rushing the week before
against Northwestern State, also picked up 62 yards on two

Lancaster hit 24 of 41 passes for 377 yards and two TDs for
Louisiana-Monroe (1-1). Zacharie caught a 59-yard touchdown pass in
the first quarter after the Jayhawks took a 7-0 lead on Meier's
11-yard touchdown pass to Dexton Fields.

Meier was 16-for-27 for 185 yards. In his two collegiate starts,
the redshirt freshman has passed for four TDs and run for three. He
put Kansas on top 21-7 in the third with a 10-yard run after
Cornish gained 22 yards.

Lancaster hit Calvin Dawson for 28 yards on third-and-7 from the
Warhawks' 22 to keep their final touchdown drive alive.

The Kansas offense in the first half had four three-and-outs,
two turnovers on Meier's interceptions and a pair of 80-yard
scoring drives that resulted in a 14-0 halftime lead.

After getting started on Marcus Herford's 29-yard reception, the
Jayhawks marched 80 yards in 11 plays on their second drive. Fields
made a one-handed grab of Meier's 11-yard pass into the end zone.

With 1:02 left in the half, Marcus Henry made a good catch of
Meier's 4-yard TD pass, beating the Warhawks' Quintez Secka, who
had tight coverage in the end zone.

Cornish set up the second TD by ripping off a 46-yard gain on a
shovel pass and then netting 20 yards on three runs to make it
first-and-goal from the 2. A fumble by Meier and then a fumble on
the center snap pushed the ball back to the 4 before Meier hit
Henry for the touchdown.

A week after Northwestern State's Robert Weeks kicked a
school-record four field goals against the Jayhawks,
Louisiana-Monroe's Ragan Walters Jr. was 0-for-2. Walters badly
missed a 43-yard attempt in the first quarter and then tried again
with a few seconds left in the half but the snap was bad.

He also missed on the extra point try after Lancaster scored on
a 9-yard quarterback draw to make it 21-13 with 1:18 left in the
