WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) -- Curtis Painter passed for 416 yards and three touchdowns -- two to Kory Sheets -- as Purdue beat Ball State 38-28 on Saturday.

Painter completed 30 of 39 passes and ran for a touchdown in his first career game with more than 300 yards passing.

Sheets had 122 total yards and three touchdowns. He scored twice in the second half on a 2-yard run in the third quarter and a 7-yard reception in the fourth. The sophomore has 21 touchdowns in 14 career games and 10 scores this season for Purdue (3-0).

Selwyn Lymon had eight catches for 90 yards and Dustin Keller had four catches for 148 yards, all in the first half as Purdue rolled up 533 yards.

Joey Lynch passed for 193 yards and a touchdown and Larry Bostic had 10 catches for 99 yards for Ball State (1-2).

The game didn't start so well for Painter. His interception to Marcus McClure led to Ball State's first points. Lynch found Louis Johnson for a 5-yard touchdown pass to give the Cardinals a 7-0 lead.

Painter responded three plays later with a 60-yard pass to Keller that tied the score.

Ball State took a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Purdue took the lead for good on a 3-yard option keeper by Painter.

Purdue led 14-10 late in the second quarter when Painter led a 93-yard scoring drive. He completed 10 of 11 passes for 94 yards on the possession, which ended with a 3-yard pass to Sheets that gave the Boilermakers a 21-10 halftime lead.

Painter ended the half with 253 passing yards, two passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown.

Miami's Alex Knipp intercepted Painter's pass late in the fourth quarter and that led to another Ball State touchdown. Nate Davis' 30-yard touchdown pass to Darius Hill and Davis' two-point conversion pass to Hill cut Purdue's lead to 38-28 with 3:35 left. Purdue was stopped on its next possession, but Ball State couldn't score when it got the ball back.
