AMHERST, Mass. (AP) -- Steve Baylark rushed for a career-high 235
yards and scored two touchdowns as Massachusetts overcame an early
10-point deficit to win its fifth straight game, 41-16 over Rhode
Island on Saturday.
Liam Coen completed 14 of 19 passes for 176 yards and two
touchdowns as the Minutemen (6-1, 4-0 Atlantic 10) fell behind
13-3, but scored 28 consecutive points to take a 31-13 halftime
Massachusetts' Tony Nelson fumbled the opening kickoff and three
plays later Rhode Island's Joe Casey scored on a 9-yard run less
than two minutes into the game. Casey led the Rams (2-5, 0-4) with
136 yards rushing.
Chris Koepplin kicked a 26-yard field goal for the Minutemen
with 8:34 left in the first quarter, but Derek Cassidy scored on a
1-yard run to give the Rams a 13-6 lead with 6:16 left in the
quarter. The touchdown was set up by a 59-yard pass play from
Cassidy to Jimmy Hughes.
Baylark capped an eight-play, 70-yard drive with a 2-yard run
with 2:18 left in the first quarter, then Coen threw 9-yard TD pass
to Brandon London and a 23-yard scoring pass to Rasheed Rancher in
the second quarter. Brandon Smith also scored on a 21-yard fumble
recovery in the second.
Baylark scored on an 8-yard run in the third quarter that put
Massachusetts up 38-13.
Rhode Island was held to Colin Gallagher's 21-yard field goal in
the second half.
