Hoosiers 55, Sycamores 7

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- Indiana quarterback Kellen Lewis threw the two longest touchdown passes of his career and ran for another score as Indiana routed Indiana State 55-7 Saturday night in the Hooisers' first game since the death of coach Terry Hoeppner.

Lewis was 12-of-21 for 285 yards and three touchdowns -- all on his first four passes -- in the most lopsided season-opening win for Indiana (1-0) since a 72-0 victory over Fort Knox on Sept. 16, 1944.

Indiana State (0-1) lost for the 28th time in 29 games.

It was an emotional night for the Hoosiers.

The excitement of playing their season-opener was overshadowed by a somber 5-minute pregame tribute to Hoeppner. Hoeppner died in June from complications of a brain tumor.

The ceremony began with Hoeppner's wife, Jane, their three children and four grandchildren walking to midfield to watch a 2 1/2-minute video of some of Hoeppner's most memorable moments at Indiana. During the tribute, the student section chanted "Ter-ry Hoepp-ner" several times and many fans wore buttons with the late coach's nickname, "Hep," printed on a crimson football.

Former assistant coach Bill Lynch is Indiana's interim head coach.

Once the game started, the Hoosiers erased any doubts about how their emotions may affect their performance.

The Hoosiers needed only eight plays to take a 14-0 lead, courtesy of Marcus Thigpen's 22-yard catch-and-run and a 58-yard TD pass from Lewis to James Hardy.

Indiana State cut the lead to 14-7 when Alex Thomas recovered a fumble in the end zone, but Lewis answered with a 79-yard TD pass again to Hardy, who finished with three receptions for 153 yards. Before the half ended, Austin Starr kicked a 34-yard field goal and fullback Josiah Sears scored on a 2-yard run to give Indiana a 31-7 lead.

Lewis opened the second half with a 3-yard TD run to seal the outcome.

Sycamores quarterback Reilly Murphy was 20-of-36 for 138 yards with two interceptions, but Indiana State managed only 38 yards rushing.
