ORONO, Maine (AP) -- Tailback Jhamal Fluellen and quarterback Mike Brusko each rushed for more than 100 yards Saturday night, helping the University of Maine defeat Monmouth University 21-14.
Fluellen, a junior, carried 25 times for 125 yards and a touchdown. Brusko, a sophomore, rushed 16 times for 109 yards and a score as the Black Bears prevailed.
Maine outgained Monmouth 342 to 234 in total yards. The Black Bears limited the Hawks to 61 rushing yards.
Brusko also completed 11 of 19 passes for 64 yards and was intercepted once.
The Bears scored on the game's first possession after a 69-yard return of the opening kickoff by Lamir Whetstone. Brusko's 8-yard touchdown run and Devin McNeill's kick made it 7-0.
Monmouth responded on its first possession, scoring on Dave Sinisi's 28-yard touchdown jaunt to make it 7-7. Sinisi finished with 67 rushing yards.
The Bears regained the lead late in the first quarter when Mark Masterson returned a punt 50 yards for a score.
Monmouth evened the score on the first possession of the second half on Brett Burke's 58-yard scoring toss to Adam San Miguel.
Maine scored the winning touchdown on Fluellen's 12-yard TD run late in the third quarter.
Burke completed 12 of 19 passes for 157 yards for the Hawks.
