GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Renaldo Gray and Cedrick Gipson led a tie-breaking drive in the fourth quarter to put Furman up for good as the Paladins beat Coastal Carolina 27-17 Saturday.
Gipson broke open the drive with a 37-yard run to the Chanticleers' 6-yard line and Gray threw his only scoring strike of the game -- a 5-yard pass to Larry Hedden.
Gray finished 6-of-12 with just 29 yards passing. He had one interception and one fumble. All total, Furman (2-3) threw two interceptions and lost two fumbles.
Those turnovers turned into 10 points for Coastal (1-4), but the Chanticleers had two interceptions of their own.
Coastal was led by William Richardson, who completed 14-of-27 and had two TDs to go along with his two interceptions.
Furman got on board first when R.J. Webb scored on a 63-yard punt return with 7:39 left in the first quarter. Scott Beckler added a 29-yard field goal and the Paladins finished the quarter up 10-0. Coastal dominated the second, scoring on passes of 16 and 17 yards and taking the halftime lead 14-10.
Furman retook the lead 17-14 on a Jerome Felton 1-yard run for the third quarter's only score. Coastal tied it up with a 42-yard field goal from Justin Durham with 12:52 left in the game.
After the tie-breaking drive, Beckler added a 42-year field goal to finish the scoring.
