CONWAY, S.C. (AP) -- Mike Tolbert ran for 244 yards and two touchdowns, including an 86-yard scoring run that broke the final tie of the game to lead Coastal Carolina to a 42-35 win against VMI in Big South Conference action Saturday night.
Quarterback William Richardson went 10-of-18 for 108 yards and two touchdowns for the Chanticleers (3-5, 1-0 Big South).
The Keydets (2-6,0-2) were led by Kyle Hughes, who completed 10 of 17 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns. Howard Abegesah rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown.
Coastal started the back-and-forth scoring just five minutes into the game when Richardson hit Jerome Simpson on a 35-yard pass play. The two teams traded scores, with no one getting more than a seven-point lead.
Arthur Sitton returned the kickoff from VMI's go-ahead score 85 yards to knot the game at 35 with 6:40 left in the game. The Chants forced a punt on VMI's next possession and Tolbert took the ball 86 yards on the first play to break the tie.
VMI's final drive was stopped by Brandon Autry's interception of a Hughes pass with 41 seconds in the game.
