Winston-Salem 20, Hampton 19

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) -- Monte Purvis ran for two touchdowns and an injured Jed Bines added the go-ahead score with 1:23 remaining to give Winston-Salem a 20-19 win over Hampton on Saturday.

Kevin Beverly ran for three touchdowns for Hampton (4-4), two of them in the fourth quarter, including the score that put the Pirates ahead 19-14 with 4:34 left in the game.

But Bines, with an injured hamstring, answered with a 27-yard touchdown run, and the Rams (5-3) blocked a last-second 49-yard field goal attempt to preserve the win.

Purvis' 6-yard run in the second quarter put the teams in a 6-6 tie at halftime, and he pushed Winston-Salem into the lead a few minutes into the third quarter with another 10-yard scoring run.
