NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Don Chapman became UT Martin's all-time touchdown leader and the Skyhawks defeated Tennessee State 43-38 to win the inaugural Sergeant York Trophy on Saturday.
Chapman scored on a 1-yard plunge with 1:53 remaining in the second quarter for his 48th touchdown, breaking the record of Bobby Fowler, who played at Martin from 1956-59.
Chapman finished with two touchdowns, which moved him into third place on the all-time Ohio Valley Conference scoring list.
Martin (4-7, 4-4 OVC) led by as many as nine points in a game that featured one tie and three lead changes. The Skyhawks were helped by defensive end Craig Worthen, who had a 46-yard interception return for a touchdown and recovered a fumble by Terrence Wright late in the fourth quarter when Tennessee St. was threatening to tie the game.
Tennessee St. (5-6, 4-3) got a huge game from running back Javarris Williams, who rushed for four touchdowns and 162 yards on just nine carries.
But the Tigers were victims of their own miscues as they committed five turnovers, including three interceptions by freshman quarterback Calvin McNairl.
The win gives the Skyhawks the York Trophy, established by the OVC for the team from of Tennessee with the best record against its in-state rivals. Martin went a combined 3-0 against Austin Peay, Tennessee Tech and Tennessee St.
