Sacramento St. 29, UC Davis 19

DAVIS, Calif. -- Sophomore quarterback Jason Smith threw three touchdown passes and ran for another to help Sacramento State beat UC Davis 29-19 in the 55th Annual Causeway Classic.

Senior wide receiver Tony Washington caught four passes for 81 yards and three touchdowns for the Sacramento State Hornets (5-5), who ended an eight-game losing streak to UC Davis that dates back to 1999.

Junior receiver Chris Carter caught eight passes for 104 yards and ran for 35 yards and touchdown for the UC Davis Aggies (5-5), who still lead the series 39-16. Sophomore running back Joe Trombetta ran for 114 Yards and had one costly fumble for the Aggies.

Washington caught his first two touchdown passes in the first quarter, giving the Hornets a 15-0 lead.

When the Aggies' defense began to hold, their offense responded by putting 13 straight points on the board.

But the Hornets never wavered, and took a 22-13 halftime lead on a 1-yard TD run by Smith late in the second quarter. The Hornets also stopped two fourth-down attempts by the Aggies in the first half.

After Trombetta fumbled away the ball in Sacramento State territory, the Hornets continued their offensive attack as Washington caught his third TD from Smith at the 11:47 mark in the third quarter to make the score 29-13.

The Hornets' defense came up with two more big plays in the fourth quarter when they stopped the Aggies on fourth-and-goal at the 2-yard line and linebacker Cyrus Mulitalo intercepted UC Davis quarterback Greg Denham with 9:53 left to play.

The Aggies scored again on a 3-yard touchdown catch by junior receiver Bakari Grant, but the Hornets closed out the game after defensive back Peter Buck got an interception in the end zone.
