KENT, Ohio -- Chandler Harnish threw two touchdowns passes and ran for two more scores as Northern Illinois took a 42-14 Mid-American Conference victory over Kent State on Tuesday night.
Craig Rusch also scored for NIU (6-5, 5-3), pulling the Huskies to a 21-point lead by recovering a fumble for 60 yards with about 8 minutes left in the third quarter. Chad Spann added a 26-yard run late in the third quarter to give the Huskies a 35-14 lead.
The Huskies took a 14-0 lead with Harnish's 2-yard pass to Reed Cunningham in the first quarter and his 3-yard run in the second. His 31-yard run in the third made it 21-7 and a 17-yard pass to Matt Simon ended the scoring with about 9 minutes left.
Leneric Muldrow of the Golden Flashes (3-8, 2-5) scored on a 5-yard run with 4:22 left in the half to bring it to 14-7, and Eugene Jarvis kept it to 28-14 with a 2-yard run with 3:15 left in the third quarter.
Harnish rushed for 117 yards and passed for 173. Kent's Julian Edelman passed for 126 yards and had 108 yards rushing.
Northern Illinois had 397 offensive yards to Kent's 253 and four sacks for 13 yards, to Kent's no sacks.
