STARKVILLE, Mississippi (Ticker) -- Fred Reid returned a
kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and Nick Turner rushed for a
pair of scores as Mississippi State continued its dominance of
Memphis with a 35-27 victory.
Reid tied the longest kickoff return in school history with
13:45 remaining in the second quarter as the Bulldogs forged a
14-14 tie. Memphis reclaimed the lead on a field goal with 2:58
left in the half, but Turner capped an 83-yard drive with a
19-yard score 2:51 later to give Mississippi State the lead for
Turner, who ran for just 26 yards, added a one-yard TD run with
2:40 left in the third quarter and the Bulldogs held on for
their ninth consecutive victory over the Tigers - the
third-longest streak against an opponent in school history.
Mississippi State has won 31 of 42 all-time meetings with
Kevin Fant completed 16-of-34 passes for 245 yards, two
touchdowns and an interception for the Bulldogs (2-4). Jerious
Norwood rushed for 85 yards on 22 carries.
Memphis (3-3) lost despite gaining 568 yards, including 398
through the air. Danny Wimprine was 32-of-60 with a touchdown
and two intercerceptions and DeAngelo Williams ran 15 times for
Wimprine's favorite target was Darron White, who caught 10
