NO CAROLINA ST 17, VIRGINIA TECH 16

BLACKSBURG, Virginia (Ticker) -- North Carolina State no longer is all about offense.

Sparked by a defense that registered 10 sacks, the Wolfpack escaped with a 17-16 victory over Virginia Tech in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup.

Last season, the Wolfpack (2-1, 1-0 ACC) were built around one of the nation's best offenses led by record-setting quarterback Philip Rivers. But with many new faces on offense, the Wolfpack's defense is carrying the load.

In last week's 22-14 home loss to Ohio State, the Wolfpack surrendered just 137 total yards. They gave up 192 yards in this one, but constantly were in the Hokies' backfield to frustrate quarterback Bryan Randall.

Despite the Hokies' struggles, they were in position to win the contest but sophomore Brandon Pace missed a 43-yard field goal on the game's final play. He also missed a 33-yard attempt in the first quarter and punter Vinnie Burns fumbled a snap deep in his own territory in the third quarter.

Burns' miscue led to quarterback Marcus Stone's one-yard touchdown run that snapped a 10-10 tie. Pace kicked field goals of 32 and 37 yards in the fourth quarter.

T.A. McClendon rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown for the Wolfpack, who still are looking to replace Rivers. The combination of Stone and Jay Davis went 6-of-17 for 78 yards and an interception.

Randall threw a four-yard touchdown pass to John Kinzer in the second quarter for the Hokies (2-2, 1-1).
