SOUTH CAROLINA 17, TROY 7

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (Ticker) -- Syvelle Newton scored on a six-yard run late in the third quarter as South Carolina posted a 17-7 victory over Troy.

On the final three plays of the game, South Carolina coach Lou Holtz inserted 39-year-old walk-on Tim Frisby into the contest. Frisby, who recently retired after 20 years in the U.S. Army, lined up at wide receiver as the Gamecocks were running out the clock.

Newton, splitting time with Dondrial Pinkins at quarterback, scored with under three minutes left in the third quarter to give the Gamecocks (3-1) a 17-7 lead.

Newton went 10-of-14 for 98 yards and an interception. Pinkins was 6-of-10 for 101 yards and an interception.

Cory Boyd scored on a six-yard run in the first quarter for South Carolina.

DeWhitt Betterson ran three yards for a TD in the first quarter for Troy (2-2), which was looking to upset a team from a major conference for a second time this season. The Trojans posted a 24-14 win at then-No. 19 Missouri earlier this month.
