Rix yanked from first start in six weeks

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Wyatt Sexton wants to play, not sit. He
might not have to worry about being on the sideline much more after
a great performance Saturday.

Sexton bailed out Chris Rix in the second half and completed 11
of 15 passes for 220 yards while leading three long scoring drives
as the No. 13 Seminoles scored 20 unanswered points to beat Duke

"I definitely was a little ticked off," Sexton said about his
brief demotion. "We were not handling business in the first

Rix failed to get the Seminoles into the end zone in the first
half while making his first start in six weeks. Rix went 9-of-15
for 94 yards and threw an interception that set up Duke's touchdown
-- his 37th pick at Florida State.

Rix, under a heavy rush, was intercepted by Duke's Cody Lowe at
midfield. Lowe ran 26 yards to the Florida State 24, and eight
plays later Cedric Dargan scored on a 1-yard run to pull the Blue
Devils within 9-7.

Duke (1-8, 0-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) wasted a second-half
scoring chance when Mike Schneider was intercepted in the end zone
by Pat Watkins.

"They made plays when they had to make them," Duke coach Ted
Roof said. "They shut it down when they had to."

Schneider completed 19 of 31 passes for 155 yards but was
intercepted three times.

Florida State's defense also forced two fumbles and limited Duke
to 230 yards, with only 61 rushing.

Florida State (7-2, 5-2) managed three short field goals in the
first half from first-time starter Gary Cismesia, who tied a school
record with five field goals in the game.

Cismesia's final field goal, from 43 yards, put him into the
school record book with Bill Capece and Sebastian Janikowski -- now
with the Oakland Raiders -- who did it twice.

Sexton, a redshirt sophomore, went 4-1 as the starter after
replacing Rix in September. But coach Bobby Bowden went back to Rix
this week.

"Early on in the week I wasn't as mentally focused as I
should've been," Sexton said. "I guess I was grieving a little
bit, you know, about being demoted."

He got over it, leading scoring drives in the second half
covering 93, 80 and 70 yards.

"Wyatt's making the right plays at the right time," Florida
State linebacker Ernie Sims said. "I feel he's the right person in
that position right now."

Bowden agreed.

"It's pretty cut and dry," said Bowden, whose 349 wins are a
record among major college coaches. "It's Wyatt. You go by what
you saw today."

Chauncey Stovall caught eight passes for 138 yards, and Chris
Davis had two catches for 95 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown
in the third quarter.

Florida State was without starting tailback Leon Washington for
the second straight game, but got 130 yards from Lorenzo Booker and
a 4-yard touchdown run from freshman Jamal Lewis.
