Portland State 14, UC Davis 12

DAVIS, Calif. (AP) -- Wide receiver Brendan Ferrigno caught five passes for 99 yards and one touchdown to help Portland State beat host UC Davis 14-12 on Saturday night.

Quarterback Sawyer Smith was 19-for-32 for 221 yards for the Vikings, who have beaten UC Davis six straight times in seven meetings. Tony Kays caught 15 passes for 165 yards and one TD for the Aggies, who have lost at home for the second consecutive week.

During Portland State's first possession, Joe Rubin scored the first points on a 6-yard sweep. Place kicker Eric Azorr made the extra point, but missed a 25-yard field goal early in the second quarter that could have put the Vikings up 10-0.

After the Aggies offense finally got into Portland State's territory, safety Steve Shinen intercepted Davis quarterback Jon Grant at the Vikings 24-yard line to end the drive. Portland State led 7-0 at the half.

The Vikings sacked Grant three times for 21 negative yards, giving UC Davis a total of six-minus rushing yards in the first half. After Portland State's Andrew Levers kicked a 58-yard punt, UC Davis drove 63 yards before the Vikings defense stopped the Aggies at the 2-yard line on a fourth-and-goal late in the third quarter.

Ferrigno's 39-yard catch from Smith set up a 1-yard run by Rubin in the fourth quarter to give Portland State its second TD of the game. UC Davis finally got on the board after running back Alex Garfio rushed in for a 4-yard TD in the fourth quarter. Matt Locklin missed the extra point.

The Aggies got a break when the defense recovered a fumble by Rubin on the Vikings 23-yard line. Grant found Kays for an 8-yard score two plays later in the last four minutes of the fourth period, but failed on a two-point conversion to tie the game at 14.

UC Davis had another opportunity to score with 2:14, but Kays, who was having a career night, fumbled Levers' 42-yard punt on the Aggies 36. The Vikings ran out the clock to end the game.
