Michigan Stadium, ANN ARBOR, MI
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan got over its setback against Notre Dame with a rout against Eastern Michigan.
Max Martin ran for two touchdowns and Chad Henne threw two TD passes to Jason Avant as the 14th-ranked Wolverines tied a school record with 28 points in the first quarter and went on to defeat the Eagles 55-0 on Saturday.
"Coming off that loss, everybody expected that we would be down," Henne said. "We sparked everybody's eyes with the way we rebounded."
The Wolverines (2-1) recorded their most lopsided win since beating Indiana 58-0 in 2000. They scored seven TDs and kicked two field goals on their first 10 possessions and shut out a team for the first time since a 38-0 victory over the Fighting Irish two years ago.
"It's always a plus [to get a shutout]. It's more of a pride thing," linebacker Dave Harris said. "Every defensive player feels good and we'll get more momentum going into next week against a physical Wisconsin team."
The two-time defending Big Ten champion Wolverines begin conference play on the road against the Badgers.
"It's about to get a lot tougher," Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said. "I think we all understand that."
Not much was expected of the Eagles, but they were doomed when Steve Breaston returned their first punt 72 yards and a bad snap on the next punt gave Michigan the ball at their 20.
"It was just so representative of, 'We're playing at Michigan,'" Eastern Michigan coach Jeff Genyk said. "We did some things we just don't do."
The Eagles were handed their biggest loss since a 56-0 setback at Wisconsin in 1994, but they did have to travel just 11 miles to make about $430,000.
After leading 38-0 at halftime, Michigan rested Henne, who was 13-of-19 for 147 yards with three TD passes. Avant made eight receptions for 93 yards and two TDs.
Martin, starting in place of the injured Mike Hart (hamstring), had career highs with 117 yards rushing and two TDs.
"We go by the saying that there are expectations for the position," Martin said.
Eastern Michigan's Matt Bohnet, who transferred from Iowa two years ago, was 13-of-25 for 118 yards with an interception.
"You have to learn from this," Bohnet said. "It's a feeling you don't want again."
Eastern Michigan plays its first Mid-American Conference game next week at Central Michigan.
When the Eagles did make a rare play in the first half, they couldn't follow it up with much production. Bohnet threw an 18-yard pass on the first snap of the game, but four plays later Breaston's long return gave Michigan the ball at Eastern Michigan's 10, leading to Martin's 1-yard TD. A high snap on the next punt set up Martin's 10-yard TD.
Henne threw 14-yard and 26-yard TD passes to Avant for a 28-0 lead in the first quarter, matching the opening burst the Wolverines had against Rice in 2000. Henne's 6-yard pass to Brian Thompson and Garret Rivas' field goal made it 38-0 late in the first half.
"The main thing is we did not come out and slop around with a lot of mistakes," Carr said.
The Wolverines emptied their bench in the second half, but that didn't stop them from scoring or help Eastern Michigan do much offensively. With several key players out or resting with injuries, Carr was glad many reserves played much of the second half.
"We had the opportunity to play a lot of guys and get some guys healthier before we head into the Big Ten season," Carr said.
