Hawkeyes win 22nd straight at home

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Drew Tate threw two touchdown passes and Albert Young scored on a 26-yard run in the fourth quarter to help Iowa secure a 38-21 victory over Indiana on Saturday.

Iowa (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) survived a big game by Indiana's potent passing combination of Blake Powers to James Hardy to win its 22nd straight home game and keep pace in the conference race.

Hardy became just the fourth Indiana player to rack up more than 200 yards receiving in a game and Powers fired two touchdown passes, the second a 6-yard yarder to James Bailey that drew the Hoosiers (4-2, 1-2) to 24-21 with 9:51 left.

Tate then led the Hawkeyes on a quick 80-yard scoring drive to regain the momentum. He hit Scott Chandler for 37 yards on the second play and moments later, Young burst through a huge hole in the left side, cut to the sideline and outran the pursuit to the end zone.

After Indiana went three-and-out, Damian Sims scored on a 30-yard TD burst to finish it off for the Hawkeyes.

Young sprinted 31 yards for a touchdown on the same play as his late run to give Iowa a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. He finished with 125 yards in 26 carries, his third straight game with more than 100.

Hardy, a 6-foot-7, 215-pounder who also plays basketball for the Hoosiers, caught 12 passes for 203 yards, including a 1-yarder from Powers for a touchdown that capped a 94-yard drive and cut Iowa's lead to 24-14.

Indiana got the ball right back when Sims fumbled returning the kickoff and Will Meyers recovered for the Hoosiers at the Iowa 23. Powers went for it on the first play, but Adam Shada jumped in front of Hardy to intercept the pass in the end zone.

Iowa usually dropped seven and eight defenders into pass coverage, forcing Powers to throw underneath most of the time. He took what the Hawkeyes gave him and finished 37-of-57 for 360 yards with the one interception.

Powers' attempts, completions and yardage were season highs, but it was the first time he failed to throw at least three TD passes. He has school-record 20 touchdown passes this year.

Hardy became the first Indiana player to catch at least 10 passes in two straight games. He had 10 catches for 118 yards in a victory over Illinois a week ago and has topped 100 yards in all but one game this season.

Tate was 12-of-24 for 265 yards, including touchdown throws of 8 yards to Matt Melloy and 42 yards to Clinton Solomon. On the pass to Solomon, Tate did a 360-degree turn to escape a defender, rolled to his left and had an easy throw to his wide receiver, who was all alone near the goal line.

Indiana had a 2-to-1 edge in possession time and ran 101 plays to Iowa's 57. They had scoring drives of 11 and 18 yards but stalled on three drives into Iowa territory in the first half and came away with no points.
