BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- LSU coach Les Miles hoped to rest some
key players and give his reserves extended playing time against
Shyrone Carey ran for two scores and fellow backup tailback
Justin Vincent added a TD run and No. 7 LSU rolled past North Texas
56-3 Saturday night in a game that had been postponed by Hurricane
"We needed to get those guys established as players," Miles
said. "Both played well in my mind. They will have to be figured
in strongly in the stretch run."
The Tigers (6-1) won their fifth straight and their 13th
consecutive nonconference game.
The Mean Green (2-5) lost for the fifth time in six games. North
Texas, which has won the Sun Belt Conference each of the last four
seasons, dropped to 3-29 all-time against SEC teams.
Vincent rushed for 70 yards on 12 carries and Carey finished
with 44 yards on eight carries. Both got additional playing time as
Joseph Addai, the leading rusher in the Southeastern Conference,
left the game after two series in the first quarter.
Addai had three carries for 7 yards and a touchdown before
sustaining an ankle injury that Miles said was not serious.
"When Joseph went down, it just gave us an opportunity to get
into the game and get some touches," Carey said. "We were given
the opportunity to produce. We wanted the coaches to see that they
have two other backs that can produce and that they should have
confidence in us."
Vincent, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards as a freshman two
years ago, scored on a 1-yard run late in the third quarter for his
first touchdown since the second game of last season.
JaMarcus Russell completed 17-of-21 passes for 244 yards and a
touchdown in three quarters of play. Backup Matt Flynn threw three
touchdown passes, two to Early Doucet in the fourth quarter. Flynn
completed all seven of his passes for 139 yards.
"I dont necessarily want to go into a game where Im ahead and
throw the football as much as I did," Miles said. "Matt Flynn is
a guys that needs to get a lot of snaps, and were throwing the ball
to some guys that are not necessarily our first-line guys."
North Texas, which came into the game third to last in the
country in scoring with an average of 10 points per game, got its
only points on Nick Bazalduas 50-yard field goal, his longest of
the season, just before halftime.
North Texas had a few other scoring opportunities denied by the
Tigers. Kyle Williams blocked Bazalduas 24-yard attempt in the
second quarter and Craig Steltz intercepted Daniel Meager's pass
after North Texas had reached the LSU 27 on the first possession of
the second half.
Jamario Thomas was stopped for no gain on fourth-and-goal from
the Tigers 1 late in the third quarter.
The Tigers scored their most points of the season and outgained
the Mean Green 566-206.
"We were in over our heads," North Texas coach Darrell Dickey
said. "These guys are really good, and they played very well. We
didnt play as well. We played very hard; we just didnt make plays
to stay in the game."
