ELON, N.C. (AP) -- Kevin Richardson ran for two touchdowns and
picked up one of Richie Williams' two touchdown passes Saturday to
help Appalachian State to a 52-14 win over Elon and its first
outright Southern Conference title since 1995.
Trey Elder also threw for two touchdowns as the Mountaineers
(8-3, 6-1 Southern Conference) stampeded over Elon, gaining 219
yards on the ground and 226 in the air compared to 96 yards rushing
and 42 yards passing for The Phoenix (3-8, 0-7).
Elon was held scoreless until 14:38 of the fourth quarter, when
Dwayne Ijames returned a kickoff 95 yards to cut the deficit to
Williams, who completed 8 of 15 passes for 95 yards, started off
the Mountaineers with a 34-yard scoring toss to William Mayfield at
8:59 of the first quarter.
Richardson added two 2-yard TD runs at 14:55 and 5:33 of the
second, then carried in an 18-yard pass from Williams with 1:24
left for a 31-0 halftime lead. He rushed for 89 yards on 24 carries
for the game.
Elder, who completed 7 of 11 pass attempts for 131 yards, passed
3 yards to Zach Johnson early in the third and 18 yards to T.J.
Courman to open the fourth for scores that raised the lead to 45-0.
