VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) -- Liam Coen threw for 350 yards and two
fourth-quarter touchdowns to lead Massachusetts to a 31-21 win over
Villanova on Saturday.
Coen capped a 90-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Brad
Listorti with 13:06 remaining to give Massachusetts (2-1, 1-0
Atlantic 10) a 24-14 lead. Villanova pulled to 24-21 with a
touchdown run by Matt Dicken with 8:23 to go, but Coen answered
with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Brandon London on the next drive
to put the game out of reach.
The final scoring pass was set up by a big 57-yard kickoff
return by Courtney Robinson. A 15-yard face mask penalty tacked
onto the end of the return moved the ball all the way to the
Villanova 20, and Coen hooked up with London two plays later.
London finished with five catches for 104 yards and Steve
Baylark ran for 104 yards and a score for the Minutemen.
Marvin Burroughs threw for 245 yards and a touchdown to lead
Villanova (0-3, 0-1). Running back DeQuese May scored on a 24-yard
run less than a minute into the game following a 48-yard run by
Phil Atkinson on a reverse on the game's first play. May added a
6-yard touchdown catch from Burroughs early in the second quarter
as the Wildcats took a 14-7 lead.
Chris Koepplin booted a 33-yard field goal and Tim Washington
scored on a 3-yard run as the Minutemen took a 17-14 halftime lead
they would not relinquish. Massachusetts finished with 490 yards of
total offense to 359 for the Wildcats.
