Either Mike Riley or Erickson have coached Oregon State for the
past nine seasons.
First Riley, who grew up in Corvallis, came to the Beavers as
head coach in 1997. He stayed for two seasons, compiling an 8-14
record, before becoming the head coach of the San Diego Chargers.
Erickson, who won two national titles at Miami and coached the
Seattle Seahawks before taking over the Beavers, was at Oregon
State for four years. In 2000, the Beavers went 11-1 with a victory
over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl under Erickson.

The Beavers were coming off a bye after a 42-14 loss to Boise

victory over Eastern Washington.
"There was a bad taste in our mouths for 16 days -- it is good
to have something else to latch on to," Darlin said.
"We knew they were a good team," Idaho linebacker David Vobora
said. "The way they played at Boise isn't the way they are. When
they put a lot of points up quick it's hard to come back."
The Vandals opened with a pair of losses, to Michigan State and
Washington State, before defeating in-state rival Idaho State 27-24
