FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) -- Sawyer Smith threw for 324 yards and four touchdowns, and No. 25 Portland State held off a late rally to beat Northern Arizona 34-26 on Saturday.
Smith connected with Tremayne Kirkland and Kenneth Macklin for two scores each. Macklin finished with 159 yards receiving and Kirkland had 123.
The Lumberjacks (4-5, 3-3 Big Sky) scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to pull within eight, then drove to the Portland State 5-yard line. But on fourth-and-goal, Alex Watson was tackled for a seven-yard loss on a screen pass with 14 seconds to play.
It was the third time the Vikings (6-4, 5-2) held Northern Arizona out of the end zone from the 5-yard line or closer. If they make it, they would be the first four-loss team to do so since Idaho in 1995.
Watson caught two touchdown passes, tying a school record with 12 for the season.
Jason Murrietta threw for 231 yards to become the ninth passer in Big Sky history to top 10,000 yards passing. He threw for three touchdowns but had his string of passes without an interception snapped at 211.
