ELON, N.C. (AP) -- Kevin Richardson ran for 158 yards and a key fourth-quarter touchdown Saturday as Appalachian State held off Elon and took a 49-32 victory in the Southern Conference.
Trey Elder ran for 115 yards and three touchdowns, and he also hit 11 of 19 passes for 161 yards for the Mountaineers (4-1, 1-1 SoCon), who racked up 526 yards to help offset 10 penalties for 92 yards.
Devon Moore's 2-yard run with 14:11 left to play helped Appalachian State open up a 28-17 lead, but Michael Mayers took the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a score to cut the deficit to 28-24.
Mayers set a Southern Conference record with 225 kick return yards and 387 all-purpose yards. He also caught 14 passes for 162 yards.
Richardson's scoring run capped a 13-play, 55-yard drive that ate up nearly 5 minutes. When Elon (2-2, 0-1 SoCon) got the ball back, a Scott Riddle was intercepted by Titus Howard and returned 41 yards for a score with 4:39 to go and a 42-24 lead.
Riddle hit Mayers on a 21-yard touchdown pass with 3:27 to play, and Riddle's conversion pass to Terrell Hudgins turned out to be the Phoenix's final points.
Appalachian State took the onside kick and finished with Dexter Jackson's 24-yard touchdown run with 3:01 left.
