MACOMB, Ill. (AP) -- Running back Tyler Roehl scored three touchdowns to lead North Dakota State past Western Illinois 41-28 on Saturday.
North Dakota State (4-0, 0-0 Great West) went ahead early, and it appeared the visitors would run away with the game when Roehl scored on a 3-yard run to give the Bison a 17-7 lead with 13:46 left in the second quarter.
But the Leathernecks (3-2, 0-0 in the Gateway) answered with two touchdowns -including on a 44 yard pass from quarterback Matt Barr to tight end Matt Warner -- to give Western Illinois a 21-17 lead with 7:34 left in the half.
But Roehl scored a touchdown minutes later on a 41-yard run, and the Bison remained in control for much of the rest of the game.
The Bison took a 31-21 lead into halftime and then added 10 unanswered points in the third quarter. Running back Herb Donaldson scored on a 1-yard run for the Leathernecks early in the fourth quarter to make it 41-28.
Roehl was the leading rusher in the game, compiling 136 yards on 27 carries. Donaldson led the Leathernecks in rushing with 97 yards on 19 carries; Donaldson also had three touchdowns.
