ELON, N.C. (AP) -- Andrew Wilcox kicked five field goals, including a 49-yarder in the second overtime Saturday, to lead Elon to a 36-33 victory over Georgia Southern in the Southern Conference.
The Phoenix (4-2, 2-1 Southern Conference) beat the Eagles for the first time in eight games.
Georgia Southern (4-2, 1-2 SoCon) broke a 23-23 tie with 8:56 to play on Mike Hamilton's 6-yard run. Elon took the ensuing kickoff and went 55 yards in 10 plays to tie the score again on Scott Riddle's 1-yard pass to Dontay Taylor and Wilcox's conversion kick with 5:33 to go.
The Eagles took the opening possession in overtime but only moved the ball 2 yards and settled for Jesse Hartley's 41-yard field goal. Elon only managed 8 yards on its possession and got Wilcox's fourth field goal, a 34-yarder.
Hartley, who made a 49-yard try in the second quarter as one of his four field goals, missed a 38-yard attempt in the second overtime as the Eagles gained only 4 yards in three downs. The Phoenix actually lost 7 yards in three plays before Wilcox made the winning kick.
Elon's offense, which averaged 421 yards a game, was held to 284 yards, including minus-19 yards rushing.
