DE KALB, Ill. (AP) -- Western Michigan quarterback Tim Hiller topped 3,000 passing yards for his career as he threw for 226 yards and a touchdown in a 17-13 Mid-American victory over Northern Illinois on Saturday.

The Bronco sophomore needed just 179 yards and hit the milestone late in the third quarter as Western Michigan (3-4, 2-1) won its third in its last four games.

Northern Illinois (1-6, 0-4) dropped its third straight.

Hiller, last year's MAC freshman of the year, completed 20 of 29 attempts and has 1,713 yards for the season. He topped 3,000 on a 26-yard strike to junior wide receiver Jamarko Simmons with two minutes left in the third quarter and now has 3,095 career yards.

Western Michigan claimed a 17-13 lead early in the third quarter on Hiller's seven-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Ledbetter.

Northern Illinois led much of the way through the opening half thanks to a pair of Chris Nendick field goals and a 59-yard option touchdown pass from wide receiver Marcus Perez to Matt Simon on the way to a 13-10 halftime lead.

Western Michigan senior running back Mark Bonds had a one-yard TD run while kicker Mike Jones added a 21-yard field goal in the first half. Receiver Juan Nunez closed with four catches for a team-high 95 yards. Huskie sophomore tailback Justin Anderson carried 29 times for a game-high 132 rushing yards. Bronco running back Mark Bonds had 104 yards on 27 carries.
