Norfolk St. 33, Florida A&,M 27

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Daryl Jones ran for 256 yards, scored a touchdown and set up another as Norfolk State held on for a 33-27 win over Florida A&M in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game on Thursday night.

The Rattlers (2-5, 1-3 MEAC) stuck with the Spartans for most of the game and had a chance to drive for the winning touchdown, but Don Carey intercepted Florida A&M quarterback Leon Camel's pass on fourth down to seal the win for the Spartans.

With the Spartans (6-1, 5-0 MEAC) nursing a seven point lead, Jones rumbled 48 yards to the Florida A&M 15-yard line, and Timothy Ferrell took a handoff on the next play around the edge and into the endzone. The snap was mishandled on the extra point, and the Spartans had to settle for six points and a 33-20 lead.

A costly Spartan mistake let the Rattlers right back in the game. Naron Sanderlin committed pass interference on fourth down, giving the Rattlers 15 yards and a fresh set of downs. Four plays later Camel found Willie Hayward in the back of the endzone for an 18-yard touchdown to pull within six points with 6:13 left in the game.

Jones carried with ball 38 times for his 256 yards, and the Rattlers could never find an answer for the 240-pound bruiser. His only hiccup of the night still worked for Norfolk State. As he closed in on his second touchdown of the night, he was hit and fumbled into the endzone. But Spartan fullback Brandon Sawyer emerged from the pile with the football, giving the Spartans a 17-7 second quarter lead.

Camel was intercepted four times and finished 6-for-23 for 64 yards and a touchdown. Phillip Sylvester paced the Rattlers on the ground with 98 yards and two touchdowns. The Rattlers were penalized 12 times for 117 yards.
