CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) -- Tory Cooper ran for two touchdowns and Mike Adams kicked three field goals as The Citadel held off Western Carolina for a 37-31 Southern Conference victory Saturday.
The Catamounts, who lost their fourth straight game, cut an early 14-3 deficit down to 14-10 on Adam Hearns 6-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Rogers with 2:54 left before the half. But the Bulldogs (5-2, 3-1 Southern Conference) went on a 17-point run that led to a 31-10 lead late in the third quarter.
Cooper, whose 1-yard touchdown run created the 11-point lead with 6:26 left in the second quarter, added a 16-yard scoring with 37 seconds left before halftime.
The Bulldogs converted a Hearns interception into Duran Lawson's 27-yard touchdown pass to Andre Roberts with 12:04 left in the third quarter to boost the lead to 28-10. Adams added a 49-yard field goal with 2:23 left in the period.
Western Carolina (1-7, 0-4 SoCon) began its rally with Todd Spitzer hitting Marquel Pittman for an 18-yard touchdown with 13:46 left. Adams kicked a 29-yarder with 11:28 to go for The Citadel, but the Catamounts took the ensuing kickoff and got Hearns' 3-yard TD run with 8:09 left.
Adams kicked his last field goal from 32 yards out with 3:16 left. Spitzer hit Pittman for a 5-yard score with 1:56 left, but the Catamounts couldn't recover the onside kick.
