CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Freshman quarterback Bart Blanchard threw for 370 yards and three scores as The Citadel guaranteed their first winning season in 10 years with a 42-31 victory over Elon on Saturday.
Blanchard went 22-for-29 through the air and added 55 yards rushing on 21 carries for the Bulldogs (6-4, 4-3 Southern Conference).
Sophomore wide receiver Andre Roberts caught eight passes for 180 yards and a touchdown, setting a Bulldog record for receptions in a season with 71, passing the old record of 69 set by Scooter Johnson in 2002. Tory Cooper had just 44 yards rushing, but three of those runs ended in a touchdown.
The Phoenix (6-4, 4-3 SoCon) were led by quarterback Scott Riddle went completed 30 of 53 passes for 381 yards and three touchdowns. His favorite target was Terrell Hudgins who finished with eight catches for 161 yards and a touchdown.
Elon scored first when Riddle found Hudgins on a fade route from four yards out with 7:49 left in the first quarter. The Citadel tied it on the next drive when Blanchard swung a screen pass to Roberts, who took it 68 yards for the score.
The Citadel led 28-17 at the half.
Elon took the lead 31-28 with 3:09 left in the third quarter when Riddle hit Hudgins on a screen pass and he went 43 yards for the score. The Citadel retook the lead for good when Blanchard hit tight end Taylor Cornett on a 4-yard scoring pass to go up 35-31 with 12:45 left in the game.
