CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) -- Renaldo Gray ran for 122 yards and two touchdowns and threw for another score to lead Furman past Western Carolina 52-21 on Saturday.
Gray also threw for 170 yards for the Paladins (6-5, 4-3 Southern Conference), who won their third straight game to close the regular season. Cedrick Gipson also ran for two short scores, while Stephone LaFrance and Joe Watson also added rushing scores.
Todd Spitzer threw a touchdown pass for the Catamounts (1-10, 0-7), while Adam Hearns ran for a 38-yard touchdown. Mike Malone scored Western Carolina's other touchdown with a 71-yard kickoff return late in the game.
With the game tied at 7, Furman scored 38 straight points in the second and third quarters to take control. Gray put the Paladins ahead to stay with a 4-yard run, then connected with Patrick Sprague for a 58-yard score less than a minute later to make it 21-7 with 2:27 left in the first half.
Gray also ran for a 37-yard TD early in the third, while Watson's 1-yarder late in the period made it 45-7 heading into the final period.
The loss marked the end of the coaching tenure of Western Carolina's Kent Briggs, who was fired earlier in the week and is being reassigned to another university job. Western Carolina has lost 15 straight games in conference play.
