HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) -- Sam Houston State quarterback Rhett Bomar threw four touchdowns and James Aston and Chris Hardy each ran for two as the Bearkats defeated East Central 58-14 in the season opener for both teams Thursday night.
Bomar needed only one half of football to complete 14 of 22 passes for 198 yards with no interceptions. Aston ran for 115 yards and Hardy for 69 as Sam Houston State amassed 261 yards on the ground.
Bomar spread the ball around to eight receivers. His favorite target was Catron Houston, who caught five passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns. The Bearkats scored on eight of their nine possessions in the first half.
Quarterback Marcus Johnson threw for 296 yards on 31 of 53 attempts for East Central, but he was sacked three times and threw two interceptions.
