NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- DeAngelo Branche scored three touchdowns and Norfolk State's defense was stellar in a 47-7 win over Virginia State on Saturday night.
The Spartans (1-0) jumped out to a 19-0 lead on Branche's 10-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Branche, who rushed for 96 yards on 20 carries, also scored on runs of 5 and 1 yards.
Lamont Thorpe padded Norfolk State's lead in the third when he returned a fumble 49 yards for a touchdown. The Spartans defense, which had 11 tackles for loss and four sacks, held the Trojans (0-1) to 103 total yards.
Dennis Brown, who completed 12-of-30 passes, threw for 126 yards including a 21-yard touchdown pass to Sherron Brown in the first quarter for Norfolk State.
Taron Hampton led Virginia State with 122 yards rushing on 23 carries.
