Dieker connected with Damian Sherman and Jeff Evans in the first half to put Southern Illinois (1-0 Missouri Valley Conference) on the board 20-0 before Hampton (1-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) scored a field goal. Dieker passed 216 yards for the game.
Warner ended the second half for the Salukis with a 95-yard touchdown run off a Pirate kickoff return. The score at the break was 27-10 Southern Illinois.
Hampton started the second half with a pair of touchdowns from Justin Brown and Herbert Bynes, making the score 27-24 at the end of the third.
But Southern Illinois came back in the fourth with another Warner touchdown and a field goal from Kyle Dougherty, who had a kick blocked earlier in the game. Hampton's Kevin Teel scored a touchdown with 3:01 left in the game, leaving the final score at 37-31.
Hampton quarterback Herbert Bynes passed for 403 yards and three touchdowns.
The Salukis earned 21 first downs and Hampton had 18. Southern Illinois outrushed Hampton, gaining 230 yards to the Pirates' 67 yards.
