NORFOLK, Va. -- DeAngelo Branche ran for 160 yards and Norfolk State held off North Carolina A&T for a 27-21 victory on Saturday.
The Spartans (2-1, 1-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) took a 14-7 lead in the second quarter on a 6-yard touchdown run by Takeem Hedgeman. Norfolk State never trailed afterward, scoring again on Justin Castellat's 43-yard field and a 22-yard touchdown pass from Dennis Brown to Dario Walker.
Castellat put Norfolk State ahead 27-7 in the third with a 33-yard field goal. The Aggies (2-1, 0-1) cut the lead to 13 in the third when Carlton Fears connected with Giorgio Lowrance on a 17-yard touchdown.
Michael Ferguson added a 1-yard scoring run with 1:56 left in the third quarter to cut the advantage to 27-21, but the Spartans held North Carolina A&T scoreless in the fourth to hold on for the win.
Ferguson ran for 124 yards on 25 carries and also scored on a 3-yard touchdown in the first quarter for the Aggies. Lowrance had six catches for 115 yards.
