After Smith and Jennings hooked up for a 23-yard score, Matt Bevins put the Flames ahead 10-0 with a 22-yard field goal with 6:37 to go in the opening quarter. Coastal Carolina's Jamie Childers ran it in from 1 yard out to cut the lead to 10-7 at the end of the first.
Jamie Fordham's 15-yard touchdown run put the Chanticleers up 14-10 to start the second, but Smith threw his next two touchdown passes of 4 and 23 yards to give Liberty a 24-14 halftime lead.
After trading field goals to start the third, Liberty's B.J. Hayes scored on a 66-yard run.
MacDowall's 6-yard run cut the lead to 34-24 after three quarters.
