LAKE CHARLES, La. -- Chris Bunch threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more to help Nicholls State pick up its first victory with a 38-35 win over McNeese State on Saturday night.
Bunch, the Colonels' backup quarterback, completed only three passes, but he hit Antonio Robinson on consecutive touchdown passes of 13 and 58 yards to give Nicholls State (1-4, 1-2 Southland Conference) a 35-27 lead with 8:04 remaining in the game.
Ross Schexnayder added a 37-yard field goal for a 38-27 lead with 2:23 remaining before McNeese State's Derrick Fourroux hit Steven Whitehead on a 2-yard touchdown pass and Richard Conner on the 2-point conversion to bring McNeese State (4-3, 1-2) to 38-35 with 1:01 remaining.
Bunch also scored on runs of 6 and 5 yards.
Todd Pendland led McNeese State with 93 yards and a 39-yard touchdown run on 15 carries.
Fourroux was 15 of 27 for 216 yards and a touchdown.
Conner finished with two catches for 109 yards and a 74-yard touchdown pass from Mark Fontenot that gave McNeese State a 14-13 lead with 13:15 remaining in the second quarter.
McNeese State, which entered the game leading the FBS in total offense and scoring offense, outgained Nicholls State 419-326. The Cowboys were averaging 492.8 yards and 43 points a game.
