NORMAL, Ill. -- Chris Dieker threw a 29-yard touchdown pass in overtime to lead Southern Illinois to a 17-10 win over Illinois State and clinch the Missouri Valley championship on Saturday.

Minutes after the loss, Illinois State coach Denver Johnson announced his resignation from the Redbirds (3-8, 2-6 MVFC), who he's coached for the last nine seasons. Johnson will be assigned to administrative duties for two months, and the school said a national search for his replacement will begin immediately.

Saturday's game the season finale for both teams.

Neither team scored in the first quarter, and Kyle Dougherty ended the scoring drought at the 11:15 mark in the second quarter by converting a 52-yard field goal attempt for the Salukis (9-2, 7-1 MVFC).

The teams were tied at 10 heading into overtime, and Illinois State couldn't respond to Dieker's touchdown pass to Ryan Kernes.

Illinois State's Eyad Salem caught seven passes for 84 yards, including an over-the-shoulder, one-handed grab in the fourth that tied the game. Walter Mendenhall gained 156 yards on 22 attempts.
