Captain Shilique Calhoun says Michigan State's effort tonight is "definitely not" good enough to beat Oregon. "This is the first game. This is where you work the kinks out," Calhoun said.

Washington's defense responded with a couple of plays in the second quarter to keep Boise State from running away with the game, but the Huskies have been anything but stingy on defense. Remember, they had three eventual first-rounders on defense last season and still finished 80th nationally in total defense.

Boise State gets tricky

Facing off against its former coach, the Broncos pulled off a WR pass from Thomas Sperbeck to Holden Huff, who made a diving catch for a 23-yard gain. Boise State leads Washington 13-0 on ESPN.

Due to lightning, Friday night's Illinois-Kent State game has been postponed until 1 p.m. Saturday. The game was finally called after more than a two-hour delay.

SMU head coach Chad Morris, after his Mustangs took No. 4 Baylor deep into the third quarter before losing, 56-21: "Those (players) that might have been wavering, which might not have been many, I think they believe now."

Adam Rittenberg ESPN Staff Writer

Baylor QB Seth Russell: "We did a lot of things right and we did a lot of things wrong. In the first game, you're going to have that type of deal." Said Bears "hit a lull" in second quarter as SMU changed defenses. Despite 5 TD passes and 59 rush yards, Russell grades his performance as "subpar."

McNichols plunges in for second TD

RB Jeremy McNichols has both of the Broncos' scores on the night and Boise State leads 14-0 over Washington in the second quarter on ESPN.

Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio says he's confident his defense can fix some the problems it had against Western Michigan. "We made some mistakes that have to be cleaned up, but that happens in the first week," he said. No. 5 Michigan State hosts Oregon next weekend in East Lansing.

No. 4 Baylor drops 56 points on SMU

Seth Russell threw for 376 yards and five TDs -- three of which went to WR Jay Lee -- as the Bears outscored the Mustangs 28-0 in the second half to run away for a 56-21 win.

Art Briles unsure of LB Taylor Young's status. Young left the game in the first half with a collarbone issue. The initial X-Rays weren't definitive, Briles doesn't know if there's a fracture. Will retake X-rays. Young would be a significant loss for Bears defense.

Adam Rittenberg ESPN Staff Writer

Art Briles wanted to guess Seth Russell's numbers. Was way off on completions -- he guessed 24 of 30, was just 15 of 30. "How many touchdowns?" Told he had five. "We'll take it." Surprised by so many incompletions but happy with Russell.

Beavers' Collins threads 44-yard TD pass

Seth Collins put this pass right on the money for Jordan Villamin to beat very tight coverage and give Oregon State a 23-7 advantage over Weber State.

Boise State strikes first on ESPN

Jeremy McNichols ran for 38 yards on the Broncos opening series and finished the 92-yard drive by bouncing outside for a TD rush.

Chad Morris can take away a lot of positives from his SMU debut, despite the ugly finish. The offense is markedly better and QB Matt Davis is a great piece to build around. Talent still not there across the board but SMU will soon make things interesting in the American.

Cook, No. 5 MSU earn season-opening win

Connor Cook threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns and the Spartans added 198 yards and three TDs on the ground as Michigan State rode a strong start past Western Michigan, 37-24. Box score

Spartans pick off pass in end zone

Western Michigan was driving late in the fourth looking to pull within a score of Michigan State, but Vayante Copeland's interception ended any hopes of a comeback on ESPNU.

Oregon State QB hurdles defender

Even though Seth Collins' run was called back for a hold, it's worth watching for the beautiful hurdle.

Washington's Jake Browning will become the first true freshman to start at quarterback for Chris Petersen tonight against Boise State. Browning's poise and decision-making during preseason camp won him the job. He threw 229 touchdown passes in high school, a national prep record, and Washington's staff felt like he was the premier quarterback in the 2015 class.
