Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz on C.J. Beathard's emergence after the transfer of Jake Rudock: "They say if you have two quarterbacks, you dont have any. Thats the old axiom. In this case, we did have two." Beathard's leadership since the promotion has "just taken off," Ferentz said.

Virginia Tech hires Fuente as coach

May: Why not Mack Brown for Georgia?

Mark May says Georgia should look to the Longhorn state -- and Network -- for its next coach: "Mack Brown. ... There's a lot of coaching left in him, and I think he can carry them over the barrier."

Kentucky QB Patrick Towles announced today on Instagram that he will transfer. Towles started Kentucky's first 10 games but had just four pass attempts with an interception in Saturday's loss to Louisville. He started all 12 games in 2014. The Wildcats lost six of their final seven contests this fall. Towles wrote on Instagram: "Although I wish my time here in Lexington could have ended another way, I'm eternally grateful."

Stanford coach David Shaw is confident about his team's standing in the national pecking order. "We're 10-2 with a really tough schedule," he said after the Cardinal beat Notre Dame 38-36. "No 1-AA teams on there. We're 8-1 in the deepest conference in America. We have nothing to prove to anybody." If the Cardinal beat USC in the Pac-12 title game and receive help from some chaos elsewhere, they can still make the College Football Playoff. But Saturday's game will most likely be a chance for Stanford to punch its third Rose Bowl ticket in four years.

Richt won games, but not the right ones

There's no question that Mark Richt won a lot during his 15-year tenure at Georgia, writes Mark Schlabach. But, says Schlabach, Richt didn't give Georgia fans enough reason to believe he'd eventually take them to the top. Fell just short

Georgia fires Mark Richt

Georgia (9-3) has fired head coach Mark Richt, a source told ESPN's Mark Schlabach. Richt was 145-51 in 15 seasons at the school, winning SEC titles in 2002 and 2005. The Bulldogs went to a bowl game every year Richt was at the school. Story

Early Pac-12 title game stat watch: Stanford leads the conference in 3rd down efficiency (55%), while USC leads the league in 3rd down efficiency defense (34%). The Cardinal finished with their best mark in that regard since 2010, when Andrew Luck led the team to a nation-best 57% clip. That's another indicator of just how good Kevin Hogan has been this year, and his hot streak started in the Cardinal's 41-31 win over the Trojans in week 3.

Now up to 15: Georgia, Maryland, Memphis, Miami, Mizzou, North Texas, Rutgers, South Carolina, Syracuse, Toledo, Tulane, UCF, ULM, USC, UVA

Georgia is taking a major risk by moving on from Mark Richt. He led the program to its longest sustained run of success in its history, and did it with nothing but absolute class. The fact remains, however, that Richt hadn't won an SEC title since 2005 and hadn't even won a division title in the mediocre SEC East since 2012. I'd argue he dealt with unavoidable factors like injuries that hampered recent teams, but this season was a mess on the field and off. Yes, this is a huge risk, but Georgia has the potential to win bigger than Richt has since falling just short of an SEC title in 2012.

ESPN Stats & Info @ESPNStatsInfo

Georgia had 85 players drafted under Mark Richt since 2001, 6th most in the last 15 years (behind Ohio St., USC, Miami (FL), FSU, LSU)

What's next for Mark Richt, Georgia?

Mark May says the fired Georgia coach could end up back on the sidelines soon: "There's a lot of jobs that are available right now. There are a lot of places that would take a Mark Richt."

Penn State coach James Franklin has fired offensive coordinator John Donovan. The firing itself isn't a surprise, but the timing is a bit of a shock. Franklin didn't really hint at this move during a postgame press conference Saturday.

Richt had slipped vs. quality opposition

Mark Richt went 12-10 against AP Top-15 teams during his first seven seasons at Georgia, but over the past seven seasons, the Bulldogs had gone just 5-15 in those games. They did not have a win against a ranked team this season.
