Steve Spurrier meant so much to so many, including the SEC's top coaches. Living legend, honest and "what I always wanted to be" were just a few of the words they used to describe the Head Ball Coach.

Steve Spurrier: It was time to resign

"Recruiting is the name of the game. And when it starts going downhill, as soon as it started going that way, I thought it'd be best for our team if I stepped aside and [they] start rebuilding South Carolina football."

Steve Spurrier has a way with words

The Former Head Ball Coach was known for giving great quotes. Here are some of the best media interactions from his historic coaching career.

Spurrier: 'I'm resigning, I'm not retiring'

Steve Spurrier said of his decision to step down as South Carolina's coach: "We've slipped and it's my fault. I'm responsible, I'm the head coach. It's time for me to get out of the way and let somebody else have a go at it."

Turnovers have absolutely devastated West Virginia the last two weeks in losses to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Combined in those two games, the Mountaineers turned the ball over nine times. "We do two ball security periods every day, so I can't designate any more practice time to that," coach Dana Holgorsen said. But to have any chance of avoiding an 0-4 start to Big 12 play, WVU will have to drastically reverse the turnover trend. The Mountaineers travel to No. 2 Baylor, then No. 3 TCU.

Urban Meyer said he left a message for his "very good friend" Steve Spurrier this morning after he read about his decision to resign at South Carolina. From one former Florida coach to another, Meyer said the "sport is going to miss him." "I've got a million Coach Spurrier stories, but we don't have time for them all. They're all good, though."

Kentucky coach Mark Stoops has known Steve Spurrier ever since the days his brother Bob was on staff with him at Florida. Here's what Mark told me about the Head Ball Coach's resignation: “Happy for him but, honestly just kind of sad. He’s such an iconic figure in college football and a guy I’ve looked up to personally. ... Great respect for his career, both as an offensive play-caller, coordinator and head coach. Kind of sad he'll no longer be a part of the SEC.”
