Sumlin unable to get in touch with Manziel

"We've reached out to him and I haven't gotten a response yet," said Kevin Sumlin, who coached Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M. "What we want is for him to be at peace and be safe. That has nothing to do with football and has everything to do with his life."

Even though his school sits in a talent-rich state, TCU coach Gary Patterson said he's open to the idea of satellite camps. He is, however, concerned that it would be "the Wild West" without oversight. "We'll have to come up with a better answer than we have now."

Charlie Strong said Texas will participate in satellite camps, but only those within the state. "Everyone's dipping their toe in now," Strong said. "There's camps all over the state. Texas coach Charlie Strong said despite true freshman Shane Buechele's banner performance in the spring game, the Longhorns "still have a battle at the quarterback position." Buechele is battling incumbents Tyrone Swoopes and Jerrod Heard for the starting job.

While Pac-12 officiating is notoriously in the news in a bad way, it's not leading the Pac-12 meetings. That said, it was a chief topic Tuesday, though apparently not a very heated one. "They did a nice job of showing the numbers, where they compared to other conferences," USC coach Clay Helton said. "It was pretty status quo β€” pretty even across the board." Good news was, for example, the Pac-12 had fewer pass interference/holding calls last year. But taking a chapter from the NFL β€” the "No Fun League" β€” there apparently will be a big emphasis on trammeling attempts at personal style β€” untucked jerseys, excessive face paint, writing on tape, etc.

Baylor coach Art Briles said he expects QB Seth Russell to be completely cleared for contact around the first of June. Russell suffered a season-ending neck injury in October last season.
