Ohio State center Pat Elflein is trying to embrace his role as a captain and help bring along a youthful roster. "I think this is the youngest team [coach Urban Meyer] has had, and they are going to have to grow up quick." There's not much time to waste: Oklahoma is looming in Week Three.

Ohio State's captains grab a quick break before heading to their individual podiums and an hour of questions from writers at Big Ten media days. Linebacker Raekwon McMillan, quarterback J.T. Barrett and center Pat Elflein will be highly in demand.

After the Rose Bowl loss to Stanford, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz asked his staff regarding Christian McCaffrey: Who in the last 17 years have we played who's better than him? [Antwaan] Randle El is the closest thing in my mind," Ferentz said of the former Indiana star. "I still think if Randle El had played at Florida State, he would have won two Heismans. He was such a dynamic player."

I asked Nick Saban if he thought he had a top four team this year and he said he doesn't know yet. "There's so many things you don't know until you start going through the season and you see how people respond." He said "it's not something you can visually see." He knows his team is talented, but said there's also more to it.

Ohio State LB Raekwon McMillan was a Butkus Award finalist last year but rarely rushed the passer. He says he didn't need to do so with teammates like Joey Bosa, Darron Lee and Joshua Perry around. Now that those guys are gone, he said, "you might see me do that more."

Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall said he will continue to have his players wear jerseys without numbers and plain helmets when fall practice begins Aug. 5. Mendenhall decided to strip everything away from practice uniforms when he arrived as a way to make his players earn everything they got. "They are working so hard," Mendenhall said. "We're thrilled with how they've embraced that." It's had a benefit to coaches, too. They quickly learned how to identify players on tape from spring practice based on their body movements, allowing them to work more quickly on footwork, technique and stances.

This year, Lindstrom is up to 305 and one of the reasons Steve Addazio thinks his O-line can make a big stride. "He's going to be a first-rounder in a few years," Addazio said.

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany says he could see the playoff semifinals moving off of New Year's Eve but that he doesn't foresee the Rose Bowl ever moving from its New Year's Day slot.

Dave Clawson said Cam Serigne was one of the offseason standouts in the weight room. Serigne had largely served as a receiver his first two seasons at Wake Forest, but Clawson thinks he'll take a lot more reps as an in-line, blocking tight end this year.

Despite returning only six starters, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer says he "sees that potential" for a playoff run for the Buckeyes. Says this is the most talented team, top to bottom, that he's had, though there is pressure on coaches to get young roster ready.

Austin Ward ESPN Staff Writer

Urban Meyer lays out the mission this season right off the top: "Have to find a way to replace arguably one of the best groups to ever come through college football." Buckeyes have their work cut out with just six returning starters, but few programs have recruited any better.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz acknowledges how tough it is to finish a regular season undefeated and says it comes down to winning the close games. The Hawkeyes won six games by single digits last season and are the Big Ten West favorite for 2016.

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst addresses the quarterback situation: "Those two will get a ton of reps in fall camp. Certainly I don't know when, but we'll name a starting quarterback." The two-man race between Bart Houston and Alex Hornibrook could go deep into camp.
