MOBILE, Ala. -- Here's what the scouts are saying after watching practices for the 2002 Senior Bowl:
Injury update: The MRI on Dwight Freeney's sprained left ankle came back negative. But the Syracuse DE is still out of Saturday's Senior Bowl and he will now concentrate on preparing for next month's NFL combine.
North practice -- Jan. 24
The North team concentrated on special teams this morning. There was no contact as the team practiced without pads. Punter Dave Zastudil from Ohio hit the ball extremely well. The left-footed kicker had nice hang time and even drove one 75 yards -- aided by a pretty good wind. Zastudil showed good leg strength and has good size for a punter.
Indiana's Antwaan Randle El was exceptional catching punts in a difficult wind. He looked impressive.
Iowa RB Ladell Betts, Ohio State RB Jonathan Wells, and North Dakota State RB Lamar Gordon all caught the ball well. They showed good athletic ability.
Sam Houston State QB Josh McCown, who replaced Joey Harrington on the roster, made some nice throws today in goal-line situations.
East Carolina QB David Garrard was a little inconsistent. He would make a good throw followed by one way over the receiver's head. He needs to put together a consistent performance in Saturday's game.
UNLV DB Kevin Thomas had a nice day. He showed some quickness and was covering people well. Colorado DB Michael Lewis continued to impress. He's always around the ball and exhibited good athleticism.
Colorado TE Daniel Graham didn't have many passes thrown his way this morning, but he has proved this week that he is a complete tight end. People wanted to see his blocking and did. He also saw a guy who could catch, run routes and has some speed. He has solidified himself as a first-round pick.
South practice -- Jan. 24
Fresno State QB David Carr showed nice touch on screen passes. He also made some impressive throws in the red zone. With his strong arm, he can really fit the ball in a small area.
| | | LSU QB Rohan Davey improved after a slow start to Senior Bowl week. | LSU QB Rohan Davey is trying to use the techniques they are teaching him. It looked like he's changed his drop to make it more consistent. When you do those things, you go up and down. It's like a golfer trying to change his swing. He was still a little erratic, but it's not going to come overnight.
Florida State WR Javon Walker has excellent size for a wide receiver. He comes from a throwing offense so he understands the passing game. Walker runs good routes, but his speed is a question mark. If he runs a good 40 time, it could really help him. Walker really hasn't helped or hurt himself in this week's practices.
Auburn WR Tim Carter caught the ball well and showed good speed on kickoff returns. He also looked good running routes and catching the ball with his hands. It's important for him to make plays in the game. NFL teams are looking for playmakers and guys who can get deep.
Georgia Tech WR Kelly Campbell needs to show speed and playmaking ability in the game. He's really only made one big play this week. He needs to show up in the game to improve his draft status. Campbell also needs to bulk up. He's very light at 166 pounds.
Tulane QB Patrick Ramsey showed great touch on screen passes and flat routes. He's not flashy, but he's really consistent. Ramsey was sound fundamentally and fluid in his throwing motion. He's not spectacular, but gets the job done.
