Valero Alamo Bowl

The Valero Alamo Bowl is a college football postseason game played at the Alamodome in San Antonio each year. First contested in 1993, the Valero Alamo Bowl now matches up bowl-eligible teams from the Pac-12 and Big 12 conferences.

The 2011 Alamo Bowl was one of the highest-scoring bowl games ever, with Baylor outlasting Washington, 67-56.

The inaugural Alamo Bowl was played at the Alamodome on Dec. 31, 1993, when the University of California overwhelmed Iowa, 37-3.

In its early years, the game matched a team from the Pac-10 against a school from the Southwest Conference, before that league disbanded in the mid-1990s. Big Ten and Big 12 teams then began to feature in the contest, with Purdue capturing two straight Alamo Bowls in 1997 and 1998 -- the final years with Builders Square as the bowl's initial sponsor.

Sylvania became the game's title sponsor in 1999, when Penn State shut out Texas A&M, 24-0. The annual game in San Antonio saw another new sponsor -- MasterCard -- take on that role in 2002, when Wisconsin outlasted Colorado, 31-28.

Nebraska won two of the next three Alamo Bowls, topping Michigan State in 2003 and Michigan in 2005. The 2007 game brought yet another title sponsor in Valero Energy as well as a rematch of the 1999 contest, with Penn State again defeating Texas A&M.

The Alamo Bowl for the 2009 college season was moved to January, with Texas Tech winning over Michigan State, 41-31, on Jan. 2, 2010. That game ended the Alamo Bowl's conference affiliation with the Big Ten, and organizers then agreed to match a bowl-eligible team from the Pac-10 against a Big 12 representative each year at the Alamodome. In the 2010 game, Oklahoma State defeated Arizona, 36-10.

In 2011, Baylor and Washington combined for one of the most productive bowl games on the offensive side of the ball, setting bowl records for total yards and total touchdowns. Baylor trailed by 18 points in the third quarter, but ended up coming back to win, 67-56.
